Steelsnowflake FAQ
About Steelsnowflake
Who are you?
A surprisingly difficult question to answer, actually. Most of the site is the exclusive work of [
Elihu Ihms], but contributions by several other [
authors] make up a lot of content in the [
Blogs] and [
Articles] sections.
What sort of material is covered on Steelsnowflake?
A very wide rage of material, more often than not science-based given the backgrounds of the contributors. Although Steelsnowflake originally started as Elihu Ihms' personal blog about science and technology, the addition of several very competent [
authors] has greatly widened the scope of potential topics. Everything from world news to the history of american education is now fair game.
How long has the site been around?
In one form or another, steelsnowflake has been around for almost eight years, initially starting out as Elihu's homepage. Steelsnowflake in it's current form has been around for over two years. The early history can be found [
here].
What are you trying to do?
The motivations behind the different blog entries are as different as the people writing them. Each author has been invited by Elihu for reasons that can be found on the [
Purpose] page.
Contributions
Can I be a contributing author?
At this time, blog authorship is only awarded on the discretion of the webmaster (Elihu). Pursuant to his stated [
purpose], he tries to look for highly qualified or at the very least, interesting viewpoints on a wide array of topics. You will note that of the five (currently) authors, two have PhDs, and two more are in the process of obtaining MD/PhDs. If you are very interested in contributing, [
contact] Elihu.
I have a neat article I'd like author (blank) to comment on. How can I reach them?
Articles / News clippings are always welcome. Do to the concerns of spam, however, we don't publish the e-mail addresses for all five of our authors. However, you can use the "contribute" button at the bottom of the blog [
calendar] to send a article directly to an author, or you can just use the [
contact] page to send it to Elihu.
Science And Religion
Some of your authors seem quite religious.
Religion plays a large part in the behaviour of people, and has been responsible for some of the greatest breakthroughs (and greatest failures) in human history. To ignore it completely would be a great oversight. The personal convictions of the Steelsnowflake authors are as varied as one would find anywhere else.
How do you stand on Intelligent Design?
As a former ID proponent (Elihu), I felt that there were certain aspects of nature that science seemed unable to explain. This blog has chronicled my "evolution" (so to speak) concerning my convictions on ID. For the most part however, the ID movement has been largely hijacked by radical fundamentalists who seem to be little interested in the science aspects of ID. They appear preoccupied in using it as a vector to push their own beliefs. Again, whatever the personal bent of any given Steelsnowflake.com author, one would hope that they try to argue from a scientific point of view, not a dogmatic one.
Technical Questions
Is there a way I can get an e-mail notification when a new blog entry is created?
I've thought about implementing this sort of functionality for a long time. The main reason I haven't is because we all get tons of e-mail, most of which is completely worthless. I would rather you visit Steelsnowflake when you're in the mood to be informed, rather than a knee-jerk reaction to a notification. Still, the concept is under consideration.
I really like the blog engine you use, where did you get it?
All of the code on Steelsnowflake.com blog engine is written in-house, and most of it is available for download on the [
ColdCode] section of this site. If you're serious about licensing some of Steelsnowflake's code, contact me for the latest versions, and help with deployment. All code is released under the [
Revised BSD License].
I found a page on Steelsnowflake that has an error message on it. What did I do wrong?
Probably nothing. Since all of the code on Steelsnowflake is constantly under revision, bugs are appearing and being squashed all the time. If you would be so kind as to [
contact] me and tell me what exactly was going on, and what the error looked like, I'd be very grateful.
